Comet Swift–Tuttle was first discovered on July 16, 1862 by Lewis Swift and then again on July 19, 1862 by Horace Parnell Tuttle. The central part of the nucleus of Comet Swift-Tuttle is about 26 kilometers in diameter. It is quite bigger than the comet that supposedly ended the world of the dinosaurs. Then the comet returned on December 11th, 1992 and was spotted by a Japanese astronomer named Tsuruhiko Kiuchi. The comet is so small that it can only be seen through a person’s binoculars. It is suppose to return in earth on July 12, 2126. It will complete one orbit for every 11 orbits that Jupiter could complete.

The comet only orbits when it is close to the Earth and the Moon. It is believed that the Chinese in 69 BC were the first people to see the comet. Brian G. Marsden is the person that is trying to predict when the comet will orbit the Earth again. The orbit seems to be very stable and should be harmfulness for at least the next two thousand years. The astronomers believe that when it appears in 2126, it will look a lot like the Hale-Bopp comet since people should be able to view it without binoculars or a telescope.

It is believed that the Earth will not actually come in contact with the comet until September 15th, 4479. That is because by that period of time, it will be harder to predict the orbit of the comet. This is also because every time the comet passes by the Sun, the Sun evaporates some of the matter into it. Therefore, it greats smaller by the time it reaches the Earth. But when it does hit the Earth, it is said it is going to be one of the most dangerous things to hit the Earth.
